Our SlateDesign Translucent stone veneer tiles should ideally be glued onto glass sheet or plexi to grant them the appropriate degree of rigidity. Recommended adhesives include MS-Polymer-based water-clear adhesives as well as clear silicone adhesives, or contact adhesive sprays: (Ceresit K 1720, Zettex X-30).

Take care to apply the adhesive evenly, without streaking onto the receptive surface in order to produce a homogenous final effect after the stone veneer tiles have been glued in place.

SlateDesign stone veneer tiles, similarly to most slate or natural stone coverings, can be covered with an extra, protective, water- and grease-resistant, high-gloss or hardening layer.

Depending on the conditions of the area of application, we recommend that the tiles’ surface be treated with an impregnating material. For optimum results, please follow the surface treatment manufacturer’s instructions.

We often get asked how to make the best use of lighting to display our Translucent stone veneer tiles to their optimal advantage. Though virtually all arrangements are one of a kind, but there are certain rules of thumb worth following. To obtain the necessary level of rigidity, the 2 mm-thick, ultra-thin translucent stone veneers should ideally be laminated onto glass sheet or plexi. If you are aiming to use direct backlighting, then a 6-10 cm distance (depending on the strength of the LED strip) should be kept to obtain an even effect without streaks.

LED strips often get situated in a specially constructed smallish box made of plasterboard, chipboard or Ytong blocks. Several types of LED strips or panels may be employed – the choice would be dictated by the desired colour, intensity and size of the stone veneer sheets. In order to achieve a homogenous final result, the position of LED strips should be tested before they are put in place. If the light source is behind the tile, we recommend placing LED strips of at least 1300 lumens every 10-12 cms. The hue of the backlit stone veneer tiles takes on a yellowish tinge with warm white LEDs and a greenish one with cold white LEDs.

If you have less room to work with, and aren’t able to keep a 10 cm distance between the LED strips, you can place them around the frame of the box. In instances such as these, 2100 lumen LED strips have been proven to work. In this way, the intensity of light might diminish toward the centre of a larger tile, but the streaky effect of the LED strips on the back can be circumvented. Using opal plexi or milk glass foil is another good option for dispersing light to attain an even effect.

A practical and space-saving solution might be using the typically 1 cm thick LED panels which are commonly available at lighting retail stores. These are available in a variety of sizes (e.g. 60×60, 120×30,120×60 cm). Once these are in position, their topmost layer can be supplanted by a Slate Design Translucent stone veneer sheet – in this way, the light is guaranteed to be homogenous.
